Surf is required to access Altering Cave.
This area is only accessible in FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald; in Emerald, it is only accessible after defeating the Elite Four. Normally, the cave contains only Zubat. The intended function of Altering Cave was that the player would be able to change the wild Pokémon available in the cave by using Mystery Gift at a Wonder Spot, in a real-life location, but the distribution that would have allowed for this never occurred. The data for the other obtainable species of Pokémon is still coded in the game, however, and the other species can be made to appear here with hacks or cheats.
