How Many Pokémon Can You Get Without Evolving in Pokémon Blue?
The player can get up to 126 species total in Japanese Blue without trading, as described here. Without evolving any Pokémon, and only collecting evolutionary stages that the player can get in the wild, as a gift or purchase, or from an in-game trade, the player can get up to 103 species. Of the 126 possible species in Blue, the Pokémon unavailable without evolving are as follows:
- Starter Evolutions (2) - 2 total
- The Starters are only available in their base forms, leaving their evolutions inaccessible.
- Stone Evolutions (9) - 11 total
- Nidoqueen, Nidoking, Vileplume, Arcanine, Poliwrath, Cloyster, Exeggutor, Starmie, and two of Eevee's evolutions are inaccessible.
- Fossils (1) - 12 total
- The Fossils can only be revived into their base forms, leaving their evolutions inaccessible.
- Other (9) - 21 total
- Butterfree, Beedrill, Pidgeot, Persian, Golduck, Tentacruel, Gyarados, and Dragonite are inaccessible. Tauros is additionally inaccessible as a Persian cannot be obtained to trade for it.
In Blue, the player can receive a Graveler and a Haunter via in-game trade, which evolve when they are received. Since the player is not responsible for initiating their evolution, some may choose to consider these "acceptable" in a run like this. If Golem and Machamp are counted, the number of species is 105.
