Gym Leader Castle

The Gym Leader Castle is a series of challenges in Pokémon Stadium 2 where the player challenges each of the Johto Gyms, Team Rocket, the Elite Four and Champion, the Kanto Gyms, and Red, from Gold, Silver, and Crystal. The cup features two difficulty modes, Round 1 and Round 2.

Team Rocket is battled after Olivine Gym. The player will battle two Rocket Grunts, followed by two Rocket Executives.

Gyms can feature one or more Trainers, which have to be battled before the player can battle the Gym Leader. When the Elite Four are battled, the player will instead battle the four members of the Elite Four, followed by the Champion, Lance. If the player loses against any Trainer, they will have to start that Gym, or the Elite Four, from the beginning. The player can choose a different team for each Gym or Elite Four set.

Defeating all Johto Gyms, the Elite Four, and all Kanto Gyms allows the player to battle Red.

In the original release, the player can choose to use either a team selected from rental Pokémon, a team consisting of Pokémon from a connected copy of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal, or a mix of both. In the Nintendo Switch rerelease, only rental Pokémon can be used.

In the original release, if the player completes the Elite Four and Champion set without using the Suspend option, while they have a non-registered Pokémon from a connected copy of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal in their team, they will be able to use the Move Relearner function to teach the Pokémon a move it previously knew. This feature is not normally available in Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal.

The rules in this cup are as follows:

• The player will select three of their six Pokémon to battle with.
• The opponents' Pokémon will match the level of the player's highest-level Pokémon. If the player's highest-leveled Pokémon is lower than 50, the opponents' Pokémon will all be level 50.
• If one Pokémon on the opposing team is asleep, any moves that can put a second opposing Pokémon to sleep will fail to do so. The player can still inflict a second sleep status on their own party using Rest.
• If one Pokémon on the opposing team is frozen, any moves that can freeze a second opposing Pokémon will fail to do so.
• If the player and the opponent both have only one Pokémon left, and one Pokémon uses Selfdestruct, Explosion, Destiny Bond, or Perish Song to knock out both Pokémon, the player who used the self-KO move will lose the match.
• Two Pokémon of the same species cannot be entered.
• Two Pokémon holding the same item cannot be entered.
