Bank Shutdown Impacts

On 13 Aug 2026, the shutdown of the 3DS application Pokémon Bank was announced for 26 February 2027. After that date, players will no longer be able to move Pokémon from the 3DS to the Nintendo Switch (via Pokémon HOME).

A list of Pokémon or entities that cannot be obtained on the Switch without Pokémon Bank can be found here. This page, on the other hand, attempts to catalog the impact of the shutdown on Pokémon games for the DS and 3DS. This is an active document and I welcome any and all updates as I research the situation. Contact me, submit a pull request, or post on Smogon forums to alert me to things I should add to this list or ask questions.

Overview

Pokémon Bank is required for the following purposes:

Transferring from Black, White, Black 2, or White 2 to any later game
Transferring from X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire to another of those games with only one 3DS
Transferring from X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire to any later game
Transferring from Virtual Console releases of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal to Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, or any later game
Transferring from Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon to another of those games with only one 3DS
Transferring any Pokémon from the 3DS to Pokémon HOME on the Switch

Therefore, the shutdown will result in the following:

A Pokémon originating in Gen 3, 4, or 5 cannot move out of Gen 5.
A Pokémon originating in Virtual Console releases of Gen 1 or 2 cannot move outside of those generations.
A Pokémon originating in Gen 6 cannot move out of Gen 6.
A Pokémon originating in Gen 7 cannot move out of Gen 7.

The result of this is that certain Pokémon that were previously obtainable in generations 6 or 7 can no longer be obtained in those games.

Pokémon

X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire

The following Pokémon must be transferred into X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire from a previous game via Pokémon Bank:

Summer Deerling and Sawsbuck (catch in Summer in Black, White, Black 2, or White 2)
Autumn Deerling and Sawsbuck (catch in Autumn in Black, White, Black 2, or White 2)
Winter Deerling and Sawsbuck (catch in Winter in Black, White, Black 2, or White 2)

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon

The following Pokémon must be transferred into Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon from a previous game via Pokémon Bank. Only the base forms of each Pokémon are shown.

Note that not all Pokémon have Pokédex entries in these games: this represented a sort of "proto-Dexit". The table below also indicates whether a Pokédex entry exists for the Pokémon.

Ribbons

The number of Ribbons that can be obtained on a single Pokémon changes due to the shutdown.

Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen Origin

A Pokémon captured in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen (the original cartridge versions, not the Switch rerelease) can obtain, at maximum, 65 Ribbons: those of Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, FireRed/LeafGreen, Colosseum, XD, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, and HeartGold/SoulSilver (there are no ribbons in Black, White, Black 2, or White 2). It will end its transfer journey in either Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White, or Black 2/White 2.
This count is instead 64 if the player is not able to use the fan-servers to receive a Wi-Fi-exclusive Ribbon in Generation 4.

Colosseum or XD Origin

A Shadow Pokémon captured in Colosseum or XD and purified can obtain, at maximum, 66 Ribbons: those of Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, FireRed/LeafGreen, Colosseum, XD, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, and HeartGold/SoulSilver (there are no ribbons in Black, White, Black 2, or White 2). It will end its transfer journey in either Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White, or Black 2/White 2.
This count is instead 65 if the player is not able to use the fan-servers to receive a Wi-Fi-exclusive Ribbon in Generation 4.

A non-Shadow Pokémon captured in Colosseum or XD can obtain the same 65 (or 64) Ribbons available to any Pokémon from a Generation 3 game.

Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver Origin

A Pokémon captured in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver can obtain, at maximum, 40 Ribbons: those of Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver (there are no ribbons in Black, White, Black 2, or White 2). It will end its trade journey in either Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White, or Black 2/White 2.
This count is instead 39 if the player is not able to use the fan-servers to receive a Wi-Fi-exclusive Ribbon.

Black, White, Black 2, or White 2 Origin

There are no Ribbons to be obtained in these games.

X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire Origin

A Pokémon captured in X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire can obtain, at maximum, 24 Ribbons: those of X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. A second 3DS system will be needed to trade between X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire: previously, Pokémon Bank could be used to transfer a Pokémon from one game to another on a single system with the need for a second 3DS.

Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal Virtual Console Origin

There are no Ribbons to be obtained in these games.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon Origin

A Pokémon captured in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon can obtain, at maximum, 7 Ribbons: those of Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.

Origin Marks

Starting with X and Y, Pokémon captured in a specific game or generation will have an icon on their summary screen that indicates which game or generation they were originally captured in. The breakdown of which pre-Switch games support Origin Marks and the type of mark used is as follows:

No mark: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Colosseum, XD, FireRed, LeafGreen, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Ranger games, Battle Revolution, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2

Several Marks can only be obtained on certain Pokémon species in X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon if they are transferred through Pokémon Bank first. The breakdown is as follows:

No mark: The first 649 Pokémon (Bulbasaur through Genesect) can only be obtained with no mark if transferred from a game that has no mark through Pokémon Bank. In addition, the following Pokémon species introduced in later games can have no mark, if their pre-evolution was transferred from a markless game and then evolved in the correct game:

Names

In Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, it is possible to name your player character or a Pokémon a name consisting of space characters. This cannot be done in any future game, meaning the only way to get a name like this is to transfer a Pokémon from a Virtual Console copy of Red, Green, Blue, or Yellow.

Achievements

The Time Travel Award in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire requires a Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald to obtain.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the Game Freak employees in Heahea City will have special dialogue if shown Pokémon originating in the Virtual Console versions of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal. If a Pokémon from Gold, Silver, or Crystal is shown, the player will receive Apricorn Balls.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the player can take pictures of their Pokémon at the Alola Photo Club. A Pokémon that originated in any non-Alola-based game, except for Colosseum or XD, will be able to have their picture taken with a special background corresponding to their original region.

Mythical Pokémon

This section concerns all Mythical Pokémon information, including Pokémon that used to be Mythical (such as Deoxys) but have since obtained somewhat of a normal status.

The list of Mythical Pokémon affected is as follows: Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion. (Magearna, Marshadow, and Zeraora aren't affected by Pokémon Bank connectivity.)

Generation 6

All Mythical Pokémon were distributed directly to X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire in events between 2016 and 2017. Without access to these events, the only obtainable Mythical is Deoxys, which can be caught normally as part of the Delta Episode. However, this Deoxys cannot be Shiny.

Generation 7

Some Mythical Pokémon were distributed directly to Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and/or Ultra Moon in events between 2017 and 2018. Without access to these events, they would need to be transferred from a previous game. This list includes: Mew, Jirachi, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Meloetta, and Hoopa.

Celebi and Deoxys are normally and permanently catchable in games that could then transfer them to Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon. Celebi is available in the Virtual Console rerelease of Crystal, and Deoxys is available in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Without transfers, they are unobtainable in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, although Celebi was distributed in an event as well.

The remaining Mythical Pokémon were never distributed directly to Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon. Therefore, obtaining them in those games always required transferring an event distribution from a previous game. This list includes: Keldeo, Genesect, Diancie, and Volcanion.
