Pokéwalker Information

The Pokéwalker is a pedometer that was released alongside HeartGold and SoulSilver on their release in 2009/2010. By using an infrared sensor, the Pokéwalker is capable of communicating with a cartridge copy of HeartGold or SoulSilver, or another Pokéwalker. Using the Pokéwalker allows the user to catch Pokémon and find items that are rare or unobtainable in HeartGold and SoulSilver otherwise, and the collected Pokémon and items can be returned permanently to HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Mechanics on how the Pokéwalker generally functions can be found on Bulbapedia. This page focuses on providing the data for the accessible Pokéwalker courses, including appearance rates & their mechanics, which aren't currently documented anywhere that I know of.

Encounter Mechanics

Every Pokémon and item that can be obtained on a course has two values assigned to it: its step value and a weight. The step value represents how many steps the player needs to take before they can obtain it, and can range from 0 to 10000. The weight is used in conjunction with the step value to determine the effective rarity, and can range from 1 to 100. Although both Pokémon and items have both a step value and a weight, the weight is used slightly differently depending on whether it's a Pokémon or an item, as discussed below.

Pokémon

Every course has exactly six Pokémon available. These Pokémon are grouped into three sets of two, which are called (on Bulbapedia's documentation and elsewhere) Group A, Group B, and Group C. Group C Pokémon always require 0 steps to encounter, Group B Pokémon always require more steps than Group C Pokémon, and Group A Pokémon always require more steps than Group B Pokémon. When the player selects a course in HeartGold or SoulSilver, the game will randomly choose one Pokémon from each group and send it to the Pokéwalker as an option for the player to encounter. This means that the player can only encounter three distinct Pokémon on any given stroll.

When the player encounters a Pokémon in the Pokéwalker, the following logic is used to determine which of the three Pokémon the player should encounter:

  1. The game generates a single random number (hereafter called 'rand') between 0 and 99, inclusive.
  2. The game checks if the player has enough steps to encounter the Group A Pokémon.
  3. If the player has enough steps, the game will check to see if 'rand' is lower than than the Group A Pokémon's weight. If it is lower, the player encounters the Group A Pokémon.
  4. If the player does not have enough steps, or if 'rand' is not lower than the Group A Pokémon's weight, the game will move on to Group B.
  5. The game checks if the player has enough steps to encounter the Group B Pokémon.
  6. If the player has enough steps, the game will check to see if 'rand' is lower than than the Group B Pokémon's weight. If it is lower, the player encounters the Group B Pokémon.
  7. If the player does not have enough steps, or if 'rand' is not lower than the Group B Pokémon's weight, the game will move on to Group C.
  8. Since Group C Pokémon always have a 0 step value, the player always has enough steps for them. Additionally, all Group C Pokémon have a 100 weight, so if the game gets as far as checking Group C, the player will always encounter a Group C Pokémon.

The way that this logic works means that Pokémon have different encounter rates depending on if the player has enough steps for Group A or not, and depending on which three Pokémon the game selected for the course, making it impossible for me to simply give a table with percentages like my other pages. Instead, here are a few examples of this logic in action:

Let's say that the player has chosen the course Refreshing Forest. This course's Group A Pokémon are Kangaskhan (50 weight) and Doduo (70 weight), its Group B Pokémon are Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂ (both 75 weight), and its Group C Pokémon are Pidgey and Sentret (both 100 weight).

First, let's consider the case where the player has fewer than 500 steps (the minimum needed for Nidoran). When a Pokémon is encountered, it will always be a Group C Pokémon, because a) the steps required for a Group B Pokémon are not met, and b) the 'rand' value, which has a maximum of 99, is always going to be lower than Group C Pokémon's weight of 100.

Next, let's consider the case where the player has more than 500 steps but fewer than 2000 (the minimum needed for Doduo). If 'rand' is less than the weight for Nidoran, the player will encounter Nidoran; otherwise, they will encounter Pidgey or Sentret. Since Nidoran's weight is 75, this means any number between 0-74 (inclusive) will spawn Nidoran, and any number between 75-99 will trigger Pidgey/Sentret. 'Rand' has 100 possible values, and Nidoran will be triggered on 75 of them, meaning Nidoran has a 75% chance while Pidgey/Sentret now has a 25% chance.

Next, let's consider the case where the player has more than 2000 steps, and the game has chosen Doduo to the be the Group A Pokémon for this stroll. If 'rand' is less than the weight for Doduo, the player will encounter Doduo; otherwise, if 'rand' is less than the weight for Nidoran, they will encounter Nidoran; otherwise, they will encounter Pidgey/Sentret. Unlike the previous case, Nidoran cannot be spawned for any 'rand' value less than 75, because if it's less than Doduo's weight, Doduo is spawned instead. This means that, when all three Pokémon's step requirements are met, the Group A Pokémon will be encountered for any 'rand' less than its weight, the Group B Pokémon requires a 'rand' between the Group A weight and its own weight, and the Group C Pokémon requires a 'rand' above the Group B weight. For this selection, the percentages are:

However, consider if the game has chosen Kangaskhan instead of Doduo as the Group A Pokémon. Kangaskhan's weight is 50, which changes the values 'rand' needs to compare to.

As you can see, Pidgey/Sentret keep the same weight, but Nidoran and Kangaskhan have different weights than they would if the game had chosen Doduo.

Items

Every course has ten items associated with it. All ten of these items are passed to the Pokéwalker when a course is loaded, so all ten can be obtained (unlike Pokémon). The logic for choosing which item to spawn is similar, but not identical, to that used for Pokémon.

  1. The game generates a random number ('rand') between 0 and 99, inclusive.
  2. The game checks if the player has enough steps for the first item on the list. (Items are always ordered from highest step value to lowest, except for in Treehouse.)
  3. If the player has enough steps, the game will check to see if 'rand' is lower than the first item's weight. If it is lower, the player obtains the first item.
  4. If the player does not have enough steps, or if 'rand' is not lower than the first item's weight, the game will move on to the second item.
  5. The game generates a brand new 'rand' to use for the second item.
  6. The game checks if the player has enough steps for the second item.
  7. If the player has enough steps, the game will check to see if 'rand' is lower than the second item's weight. If it is lower, the player obtains the second item.
  8. [Continue the above logic through all ten items. The tenth item's step value is 0 and its weight is 100, so it will always be obtained if none of the other items is.]

The difference between generating a new 'rand' and not doing that slightly affects the calculation. Here is a comparison of what the difference would look like for the Doduo example in Pokémon: As it is, 'rand' needs to be between 70 and 75 for a Nidoran to spawn if the player has over 2000 steps, giving it a 5% chance. If the game instead generates a new 'rand' to check for Nidoran, this would instead mean that Nidoran can be spawned with any 'rand' under 75 if Doduo fails. Since it's a 30% chance to fail Doduo, this means that Nidoran would actually have a (0.3 * 75) = 22.5% chance to spawn, while Pidgey/Sentret would have 2.5%. This is very different from the case the game actually uses, where Nidoran has a 5% chance and Pidgey/Sentret has a 25% chance!

In order to calculate any one item's appearance rate, you will have to calculate the chance of generating a 'rand' below the item's weight (this is always going to be equal to the weight; e.g. a 20 weight is a 20% chance) and then multiply it by the chance of failing the checks for all the items higher on the list than the one you're checking. Keep in mind that only items that can be obtained at your current step counter need to be considered, because the game will just skip any items you don't meet the step requirement for.

Other Pokéwalker Items

The player can also find items when interacting with another Pokéwalker. The item the player finds is taken from the same list of ten that can be found normally in the Pokéwalker, but the method of deciding which item to give the player is different.

  1. The game first takes the sum of both players' watts, multiplies it by 10, and then adds the sum of both players' steps.
  2. If this value is greater than or equal to 20000, the players get either the first or second item in the course list.
  3. If this value is less than 20000 but greater than or equal to 10000, they get either the third or fourth item.
  4. If this value is less than 10000 but greater than or equal to 5000, they get either the fifth or sixth item.
  5. If this value is less than 5000 but greater than or equal to 2500, they get either the seventh or eighth item.
  6. Otherwise, if the value is less than 2500, they get either the ninth or tenth item.

Each step listed above said that the player will get one of two items. Which item the player gets is determined by how many steps they have compared to the either player. The player who has more steps will get the first item of the two possible items (aka the item that is higher in the list), and the player with fewer steps will get the second.

Advantageous Types

As of this writing, Bulbapedia has the following paragraph about the Pokéwalker:

Each Pokéwalker area has three advantageous types which vary between areas, and have influence over the Pokéwalker's Poké Radar and Dowsing Machine. When a Pokémon of an advantageous type is brought into an area, then the chance of finding rarer Pokémon when using the Poké Radar and items when using the Dowsing Machine will slightly increase. In addition to making rarer Pokémon easier to find when using the Poké Radar, an advantageous type will lower the required step count for each Pokémon by 25%. This effect does not apply to the Dowsing Machine.

I believe this information is partially incorrect. The way advantageous types are handled in the game's code is that HeartGold and SoulSilver load data for a course that the player selects, in order to send it to the Pokéwalker. Before sending it to the Pokéwalker, the game will check if the player's selected Pokémon is an advantageous type for the chosen course. If it is, the game decreases the step count by 25% (which matches what Bulbapedia says). However, according to Mow, this is the only place in the code where the game uses information about advantageous types. The data about them is not used anywhere else in HeartGold or SoulSilver's code for dealing with the Pokéwalker, and - importantly - the Pokéwalker itself has no conception of a "type" and can't possibly store any information related to that, so it's not possible that the Pokéwalker is responsible for any part of dealing with types. Therefore the only effect of an advantageous type is lowering the step count required for Pokémon by 25%.
