Gold, Silver, and Crystal Utility Guide

The following tables contain every place where a utility item (an HM, Headbutt, Rock Smash, the Bicycle, the Squirtbottle, or the Pokégear radio) is required to access something.

HM01 Cut

HM01 Cut
Location Object of interest
Violet City Cut is required to access a Hyper Potion.
Route 36 Cut is required to access Route 35 without going through National Park.
Route 32 Cut is required to obtain TM05 Roar from a man on the western plateau.
Ilex Forest Cut is required to pass between the northern and southern areas.
Route 35 Cut is required to access Route 36 directly.
Route 42 Surf and Cut are required to access the Apricorn trees and Suicune.
Route 43 Surf and Cut are required to access a Bitter Berry.
Lake of Rage Cut is required to access Wesley, Cooltrainer Aaron, a Rare Candy, TM10 Hidden Power, and TM43 Detect. In Gold and Silver, Cut is also required to access a Max Ether. In Crystal, Cut is also required to access an Elixer.
Viridian City Cut or Surf is required to collect TM42 Dream Eater from a man in the southwest.
Route 2 Cut is required to access the eastern half of the route, which contains a Carbos, an Elixer, a Nugget, and the Diglett's Cave entrance.
Route 25 Cut is required to access a Protein.
Vermilion City Cut or Surf is required to access the Gym.
Route 9 Cut is required to access this route from Cerulean City.
Route 8 Cut is required to access the grass patch.
Celadon City Cut is required to access the Gym.
Route 12 Cut is required to access a Calcium.
Route 12 Cut and Surf are required to access a Nugget.
Route 13 Cut is required to access the grass patch.
Route 14 Cut is required to access the grass patch and a trade, as well as the upper path of Route 15.
Route 15 Cut is required on Route 14 to access the upper path.
Route 16 Cut is required to access the grass patch.
Fuchsia City Cut is required to access a Burnt Berry.
Route 28 Cut is required at Mt. Silver to access TM47 Steel Wing and a Rare Candy.
Mt. Silver Cut is required to access TM47 Steel Wing and a Rare Candy on Route 28.

HM03 Surf

HM03 Surf

New Bark Town Surf is required to travel to Route 27 to the east. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Cherrygrove City Surf is required to collect a Mystic Water from a man on the island. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 30 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 31 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Dark Cave (Route 31/46 side) Surf is required to access the Route 45 side from here, although ledges prevent access to the whole area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Dark Cave (Route 45 side) Surf is required to collect the Blackglasses from a man in the northwest, as well as to access TM13 Snore and a Revive. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Violet City Surf is required to access a PP Up and a Rare Candy. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Ruins of Alph Surf is required to access the second and third puzzles, as well as Psychic Nathan and the grass patch. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Ruins of Alph Surf and Strength are required to access the fourth puzzle from Union Cave.
Route 32 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Union Cave Surf is required to access all of B2F, the Ruins of Alph exits, and much of B1F, including all four Trainers. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Union Cave Surf and Strength are required to access the southern exit to the Ruins of Alph on B1F.
Slowpoke Well Surf is required to access and traverse B2F. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Ilex Forest Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 34 Surf is required to access a Rare Candy, a Soft Sand, and Cooltrainers Irene, Jenn, and Kate. In Crystal, Surf is also required to access a Nugget. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 35 Surf is required to access a Mysteryberry. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Ecruteak City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Olivine City Surf is required to access a Protein in the harbor. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 40 Surf is required to traverse the route and travel to Route 41. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 41 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Whirl Islands Surf is required to access all of the islands, as well as to navigate the Southwest cave and B2F. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered in these areas and Lugia's room with Surf.
Cianwood City Surf is required to access Cianwood City the first time, as well as to travel to Route 41. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 42 Surf is required to access a hidden Max Potion and a Super Potion, as well as to navigate the route without going through Mt. Mortar. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 42 Surf and Cut are required to access the Apricorn trees.
Route 43 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 43 Surf and Cut are required to access a Bitter Berry.
Mt. Mortar Surf is required to access a Hyper Potion on B1F. In Gold and Silver, Surf is also required to access a Full Heal on B1F. In Crystal, Surf is also required to access a Full Restore, a Max Ether, a PP Up, and a Carbos on B1F. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Mt. Mortar Surf and Waterfall are required to access the entire 2F floor, as well as a Max Repel and a Max Revive on 1F (back), and a Max Revive and Blackbelt Kiyo on B1F. In Crystal, Surf and Waterfall are also required to access a Max Potion and an Iron on B1F.
Mt. Mortar In Crystal, Strength, or Surf and Waterfall are required to access Super Nerd Markus on 1F.
Lake of Rage Surf is required to access the Red Gyarados and obtain the Red Scale. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 44 Surf is required to access the grass patch, a Max Revive, and an Elixer. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Blackthorn City Surf is required to access the Dragon's Den. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Dragon's Den Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 45 Surf is required to access a PP Up. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 27 Surf is required to access Tohjo Falls and Route 26, as well as a Rare Candy. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 27 Surf and Whirlpool are required to access TM22 Solarbeam and Bird Keeper Jose.
Tohjo Falls Surf is required to access a Moon Stone. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Tohjo Falls Surf and Waterfall are required to traverse the area.
Route 26 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Pallet Town Surf is required to travel to Route 21 in the south. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Viridian City Cut or Surf is required to collect TM42 Dream Eater from a man in the southwest.

Cerulean City Surf is required to access a Berserk Gene. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 24 Surf is required to access a Berserk Gene in Cerulean City, by Surfing down the western channel. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 25 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 6 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Vermilion City Cut or Surf is required to access the Gym.
Vermilion City Surf is required to access an Iron in the harbor. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 9 Surf is required to access the Power Plant on Route 10 by Surfing down the eastern channel. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 10 Surf is required to access the Power Plant, by Surfing from Route 9. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Power Plant Surf is required to access the Power Plant, by Surfing from Route 10.
Celadon City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 12 Surf is required to access an Elixer. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 12 Cut and Surf are required to access a Nugget.
Route 13 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Fuchsia City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Routes 19, 20, and 21 Surf is required to navigate all three routes.
Wild Pokémon can be encountered on these routes with Surf.
Cinnabar Island Surf is required to access Cinnabar Island the first time, as well as to travel to Route 20. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 28 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Mt. Silver Surf is required to access a Full Restore outside the mountain. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Mt. Silver Surf and Waterfall are required to access several rooms, their items, and the Pokémon within inside the mountain.

HM04 Strength

HM04 Strength

Ruins of Alph Surf and Strength are required to access the fourth puzzle from Union Cave.
Union Cave Surf and Strength are required to access the southern exit to the Ruins of Alph on B1F.
Slowpoke Well Strength is required to access B2F.
Burned Tower Strength is required to access TM20 Endure.
Cianwood City Strength is required to navigate the Cianwood Gym.
Mt. Mortar 1F (back) Strength is required to access a Hyper Potion and an Escape Rope. In Crystal, Strength is also required to access an Ultra Ball and a Nugget.
Mt. Mortar 1F In Crystal, Strength, or Surf and Waterfall are required to access Super Nerd Markus.
Ice Path Strength is requird to traverse the area.
Blackthorn City Strength is required to navigate the Blackthorn Gym.

HM05 Flash

HM05 Flash

Dark Cave (both areas) Flash is recommended, but not required.
Ruins of Alph In Crystal, Flash is required to access the hidden room of the second puzzle.
Whirl Islands (all areas) Flash is recommended, but not required.
Mt. Mortar In Gold and Silver, Flash is recommended.
Rock Tunnel Flash is recommended, but not required.
Mt. Silver Flash is recommended, but not required, inside the mountain.

HM06 Whirlpool

Route 41 Whirlpool is required to access a Max Ether and the Whirl Islands.
Whirl Islands Whirlpool is required to access all of the islands.
Dragon's Den Whirlpool is required to access a Dragon Fang, a Max Elixer, and a Revive. In Crystal, Whirlpool is also required to access the back of the Dragon Shrine.
Route 27 Surf and Whirlpool are required to access TM22 Solarbeam and Bird Keeper Jose.

HM07 Waterfall

Mt. Mortar Surf and Waterfall are required to access the entire 2F floor, as well as a Max Repel and a Max Revive on 1F (back), and a Max Revive and Blackbelt Kiyo on B1F. In Crystal, Surf and Waterfall are also required to access a Max Potion and an Iron on B1F.
Mt. Mortar In Crystal, Strength, or Surf and Waterfall are required to access Super Nerd Markus on 1F.
Tohjo Falls Surf and Waterfall are required to traverse the area.
Mt. Silver Surf and Waterfall are required to access several rooms, their items, and the Pokémon within inside the mountain.

Rock Smash

Dark Cave (Route 31/46 side) Rock Smash is required to access an Elixer, a Hyper Potion, and a Full Heal. It is also required to access the eastern exit leading to Route 46, which allows access to some items and Trainers. In Crystal, it is also required to access a Dire Hit. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Burned Tower In Gold and Silver, Rock Smash is required to access a Burn Heal, an X Speed, and Ether, and two Trainers. In Crystal, Rock Smash is required to access an HP Up.
Route 40 Rock Smash is required to access a Hyper Potion. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Cianwood City Rock Smash is required to access a Revive and a Max Ether. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Mt. Moon Square Rock Smash is required to access the Moon Stone left after the Clefairy leave.

Squirtbottle

Route 36 The Squirtbottle is needed to battle the Sudowoodo blocking the path. Clearing Sudowoodo is required to access Ecruteak City.
