Battle Pyramid

The Battle Pyramid is one of seven facilities located in the Battle Frontier, accessible only in Emerald. The Frontier Brain here is Brandon.

Modes

The Battle Pyramid only has one mode. Players can bring three Pokémon, and may engage in both Single and Double Battles over the course of the challenge.

Mechanics

Gimmick

The player must ascend through seven floors to reach the summit of the pyramid. Each of the seven floors is randomly generated by placing template areas next to each other, and can contain Trainers, items, and wild Pokémon. Each floor is dark, as though in a cave where the player has not used Flash, though some additional visibility is granted for each Trainer the player defeats.

General

Mechanics that apply to every Facility are on the Battle Frontier page. Here are mechanics specific to the Battle Palace:

Resources

Frontier Brain

The Frontier Brain, Brandon, appears at the end of the 3rd round and again at the end of the 10th. After defeating him the second time, he will appear every 5 rounds. His Pokémon have 16 IVs in his Silver Symbol battle and 31 in his Gold Symbol battle. His teams are as follows:

Trainers and Pokémon

The list of Trainers that can be encountered is located here. The list of Trainer Pokémon that can be encountered is located here.

All Trainers use only one Pokémon.

Trainers' Pokémon have the items listed on the Pokémon listing page, even though the player's held items are constrained by the Pyramid rules.

In other facilities, the Trainers that can be generated for a given round of 7 battles are dependent on which round of 7 the player is facing. In the Battle Pike, a round of 7 battles is functionally equivalent to a single pass through all fourteen rooms.

Battle Points

The player will receive 5 Points for clearing the first round, 5 for the second, 6 for the third, 6 for the fourth, etc. to a maximum of 15 Points per round. An additional 10 Points are added every time the player faces and defeats Brandon.

Room Layouts

Room generation works as follows, as outlined in the post linked above.

Every floor is 32 tiles tall by 32 tiles wide (32 x 32). Every floor is divided into 16 sections of 8 x 8 tiles each. The layouts of each of the 8 x 8 sections are shown below, including Trainer and item locations.

Picture with the layouts of the 16 templates

Which of these templates can possibly be used for the layout depends on which floor the player is on. If we assume that these tiles are labeled 1-16, going across and then down, the floors' available templates are shown in the tables below.

Each template also has a specific chance of being generated. These values are shown next to the template numbers.

When the player spawns onto a floor, they will appear on the blue tile of whichever section they spawn into. The exit tile is also the blue tile, but on a random different section on the floor. There is no consistency to where on the floor the entry and exit tiles are placed.

Trainers can be facing multiple directions, with one being randomly selected when the floor is loaded. The directions that some Trainers are facing may result in the player engaging in a Double Battle if they walk on a tile that can be seen by two Trainers.

After defeating Trainers, speaking to them will give the player a hint about the floor. Hints can include: the number of remaining Trainers; the number of remaining items; and the general direction of the exit tile.

Items

When the challenge begins, the player is given a Battle Bag that has only a Hyper Potion and an Ether. Over the course of the player's challenge, they can collect items from the ground and through a Pokémon's Pickup ability. Items are stacked in the bag. When the challenge ends, if the player has more than 10 types of items (including those held by their Pokémon), they will be asked to discard items until there are only 10 types remaining. When the player resumes their challenge, they will be given the same Battle Bag with the same items that the player ended their previous challenge with.

Items for the Battle Pyramid are taken from a specific list. The list changes every challenge. In all cases, the list will have exactly 10 item slots.

In the below table, any slot with exactly one item will always have that item, and any slot with two or more will cycle through the items in the order shown. When the end of that slot's list is reached, it will repeat.

Slot Item(s)
1 Hyper Potion
2 Fluffy Tail, Dire Hit, X Attack, X Defend, X Speed, X Accuracy, X Special, Guard Spec.
3 Cheri Berry, Pecha Berry, Rawst Berry, Lum Berry, Chesto Berry, Lum Berry (15x - so this Lum Berry repeats 15 times before the entire cycle repeats)
4 Ether
5 Lum Berry, Leppa Berry
6 Revive
7 Brightpowder, Leftovers, Scope Lens, Quick Claw
8 Shell Bell, Choice Band, Focus Band, King's Rock
9 Max Revive, Full Restore
10 Sacred Ash, Max Elixir

The probability of picking up each item slot with Pickup is shown in the table below.

When picking up an item normally, every floor has a different set of probabilities for the likelihood of each item slot. Each floor additionally removes one slot from the possible slots that can be found on that floor. The tables below give further details.

Wild Pokémon

Every floor contains wild Pokémon that can attack the player. These Pokémon are usually themed around a specific type or status condition. A Hex Maniac next to the PC in the lobby will give a hint as to the theme of the following challenge.

When all of the themes have been used, the game will repeat the list from the beginning.

Pokémon always have random gender, Ability, nature, and IVs, except for a few that are set to have a specific ability; I make note of those below. Pokémon here are also intentionally made to be much more difficult to run from than regular wild Pokémon. The Fluffy Tail item that the player can find guarantees a successful escape from a wild Pokémon, but Run Away does not.

All wild Pokémon have a range of 10 levels. Which levels in particular the Pokémon can be is dependent on the mode and the individual Pokémon's 'level value'. Calculating level works as follows:

For Level 50:

  1. Get the level value of the Pokémon.
  2. Subtract 5 from this value.
  3. The level range will be from this level you have just calculated to the level 10 levels higher.

For example, consider Plusle, whose level value is 35. Subtracting another 5 results in 30. Thus, Plusle's level range in Level 50 is from 30 to 40.

For Open Level:

  1. Get the level value of the Pokémon.
  2. Subtract the level value from either the player's highest-level Pokémon or 60, whichever is higher.
  3. Subtract 5 from this value.
  4. The level range will be from this level you have just calculated to the level 10 levels higher.

In Open Level, Plusle's level value is 15. If the players' Pokémon are level 80, then subtracting 15 from 80 results in 65. Subtracting another 5 results in 60, meaning Plusle's level range is from 60 to 70.

There are 10 encounter slots on every floor of the challenge, but each of the lists below contain 8 Pokémon. Some Pokémon may appear in multiple slots. Also, not every Pokémon can appear on every floor of the challenge. The table below shows which Pokémon can appear in which slots on each floor, and the probability of every slot being chosen.

20% 20% 10% 10% 10% 10% 5% 5% 4% 4% 1% 1%
Floor 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 3 3 3 4 3 4
Floor 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 4 4 4 5 4 5
Floor 3 3 3 3 3 4 4 5 5 5 6 5 6

The Pokémon that can appear in Level 50 and Open Level are identical, except for their level values. The tables below give data on the Pokémon, including both level values. The 'Number' value corresponds to the table above.
