Battle Tower Trainers

In the Battle Tower, enemy Trainers - their Trainer class and name - are pulled from a pre-existing list of 172 Trainers. Every Trainer in this list has a number and a Pokémon roster associated with them. The number determines which Ranks you are able to fight the Trainer in; lower numbers will appear in earlier battles than higher numbers. The enemy Trainer's three Pokémon will be a random selection of Pokémon from their roster, although they will never use two Pokémon of the same species or two Pokémon with the same held item.

Unlike in previous games, the IVs of enemy Trainers' Pokémon are tied to the exact Pokémon set rather than the Trainer. More details can be found on the Battle Tower Pokémon page.

The numbers after the Pokémon's names refer to set numbers, explained in more detail on the Battle Tower Pokémon page.

Battle Tower Group Mechanics

As outlined on the Battle Tower Pokémon page, Pokémon are grouped based on their IV values. There are five groups: 16IV, 19IV, 23IV, 27IV, and 31IV. Most Pokémon have a distinct set for each of the first four groups, although some (pseudo-legendaries and a few other "strong Pokémon") have sets only in the 23IV and 27IV groups. The 31IV group consists entirely of Pokémon used by Leon in his Master Ball battle, the Charizard he uses in his Ultra Ball battle, and the Dynamax-capable Pokémon used by Trainers 165-172 (all of which are only fought at Max Rank).

The rosters of most Trainers are set up such that each Trainer uses only Pokémon belonging to one or two specific groups. The correspondences are shown below.
