Legends: Arceus Massive Mass Outbreaks

Overview

Massive mass outbreaks are a variation on mass outbreaks that were added in the free Daybreak update (version 1.1.0), released 28 February 2022. They first appear during Request 95: A New Anomaly, a request also introduced in the same update, which requires the player to have received Mission 20: The Researcher of Myths. Over the course of Requests 95-101, the player will be asked to investigate massive mass outbreaks around Hisui. Once the player has completed Request 101: Massive Mass Outbreak in the Icelands, when the player leaves the village to go to a wilderness area, they will be alerted if massive mass outbreaks exist in any area.

A massive mass outbreak is marked on the full overworld map by a circular icon with a question mark. When the player visits a wilderness area with a massive mass outbreak, the weather is always thunderstorm (or snowstorm in Alabaster Icelands), and looking at the map reveals spots within the area marked with the same question mark icon. Each icon marks the location of an individual Pokémon outbreak. Speaking to Mai at any of the camps and agreeing to give her Munchlax 5 Aguav Berries will reveal the species associated with each outbreak.

The individual outbreaks within a massive mass outbreak are different from regular mass outbreaks in that they typically feature Pokémon at much higher levels, and there are two "bonus" conditions that can be applied to individual outbreaks that can never be applied to regular mass outbreaks. The first, the "Berry" condition, is marked with a Berry icon overlaid on top the species icon associated with the outbreak, and indicates that catching or defeating any Pokémon in the outbreak will reward the player with an Aguav Berry in addition to any other items the Pokémon dropped. The second condition, the "Extra Wave" condition, allows a second outbreak to appear when all the Pokémon from the outbreak have been defeated, captured, or chased off. This can be indicated with a star icon overlaid on the species icon, but it also has a small chance of happening to other outbreaks organically (so long as they do not already have the Berry condition).

Outbreak Mechanics

Generating an Outbreak

When the player returns to Jubilife Village from any wilderness area, all existing mass outbreaks and massive mass outbreaks are cleared, and new ones are generated. Each wilderness area is checked individually, and each area has a 20% chance to generate a normal mass outbreak and a 20% chance to generate a massive mass outbreak.

Once a massive mass outbreak has been generated, the number of individual outbreaks within the area is generated. This will always be between 11 and 15. Each individual outbreak will have 8-10 Pokémon, and second waves in Extra Wave outbreaks have 6-7 Pokémon.

Bonus Conditions

If the number of outbreaks is 12 or greater, it is guaranteed that at least one outbreak on the map will have the Extra Wave condition and be marked with the star icon. The exact number depends on the size of the massive mass outbreak: a total between 12 and 14 will always guarantee 1 marked Extra Wave outbreak, and a total of 15 will always guarantee 2.

Apart from the guaranteed Extra Wave outbreaks, the chance of any individual outbreak having a condition is shown in the following table.

All Pokémon obtained from the second wave of an Extra Wave outbreak automatically have three perfect IVs.

Duration

When the player first visits the wilderness area, a timer will be set that indicates how long the massive mass outbreak will last. When the timer finishes, the weather clears, and existing outbreaks will disappear. If the player is near an outbreak when the timer runs out, the Pokémon in the outbreak that have already appeared on the map will persist until they are captured, defeated, or the player leaves the area, but no new Pokémon of that species will replace them when they are captured or defeated.

It also seems to be the case that outbreaks clear pre-existing spawns from an area around them, and it seemed to me that these did not reappear anytime after the outbreak ended. Therefore, after an outbreak ends, leaving the area and returning may be required to bring, for example, static alpha Pokémon back to the map.

The timer of an outbreak can be set to one of the following initial values:

• 7 minutes: 75%
• 9 minutes: 15%
• 11 minutes: 10%

Additionally, messages will pop up on screen when the player reaches specific points within the timer, indicating how much time is remaining in the outbreak. The messages and their indications are shown below.

Pokémon Mechanics

Shiny Pokémon

Additional rolls for Shininess are granted to Pokémon within a massive mass outbreak. How many additional rolls (and the resulting rate of Shininess) are granted depends on if the Pokémon's research level in the Pokédex is 10 or perfect (all tasks completed), and if the player has the Shiny Charm. Rates are shown in the table below.

Pokémon Generation

Every wilderness area has a set list of Pokémon species that can be used in a massive mass outbreak. When an outbreak is viewed on the map, the Pokémon whose icon appears at the site of the outbreak is considered the "base species" for the outbreak. The Pokémon's evolved form may appear in the outbreak, and an outbreak with the Extra Wave condition has a chance of generating an outbreak of the evolved form as its second wave (in this case, the icon will change to reflect the new Pokémon). However, it is not possible to see a Pokémon's second evolution within an outbreak.. As an example, an outbreak whose base species is Teddiursa will only ever feature Teddiursa and Ursaring, even in its second wave. To see Ursaluna, you would have to locate an outbreak whose base species is Ursaring.

Pokémon with branched evolutions (Kirlia, Wurmple, and Snorunt) have multiple entries in the data for each of their evolutionary paths. Therefore, a Wurmple outbreak might have Silcoon or Cascoon, but it will never have both. A Kirlia outbreak featuring Gallade is rarer than one featuring Gardevoir, and a Snorunt outbreak featuring Froslass is rarer than one featuring Gallade.

The rates of each base species are different, with some being more common than others. The "Species Rate" column in the Pokémon tables below indicates the chance that any single outbreak will have the Base Pokémon as its base species.

All wilderness areas have three tables, referred to in Anubis' documentation as the Common, Rare 1, and Rare 2 tables. When a massive mass outbreak is generated, two outbreaks on the map will be selected to use a species from the Rare 1 and Rare 2 tables. All other outbreaks will use species from the Common table. The Species Rates in the tables below indicate the chance that the given species will be selected once the outbreak has already been selected to be a Common, Rare 1, or Rare 2 outbreak.

Extra Waves

There are three types of Extra Wave conditions that can be applied to an outbreak:

1. The Pokémon's evolved species. Only this evolution and its Alpha state can be generated.
2. Alphas of the base species. Only Alpha specimens for the base species can be generated.
3. Alphas of the evolved species. Only Alpha specimens for the evolved species can be generated.

If a base species does not have an evolution, the second wave will always be for Alpha specimens of that Pokémon.

The chances of each type of Extra Wave being used are as follows:

Species Rates

With the exception of Basculin, the rates of each type of Pokémon (base species, evolved species, and their Alphas) appearing within an outbreak are always consistent. The second column indicates the rates of Pokémon that is both the base species and capable of evolution, and the third column is for base species that do not evolve, and the case when the second wave is for the base species' evolved form. Alpha outbreaks always just have a 100% chance of generating an Alpha of that species.

Basculin instead uses these rates for its first wave (second wave Basculegion rates use the above table):

Note that Spiritomb cannot appear until Request 22: Eerie Apparitions in the Night has been completed, and Unown cannot appear until all 28 Unown in the overworld have been captured.
