Free Battle Mode

In Free Battle Mode, players can face either a second human player (using a second Nintendo 64 controller) or a computer-controlled player. The player has the option to select from one of three rulesets:

• Level 1-30 Division: Like the Level 1-30 Division tournament, entered Pokémon must be between levels 1 and 30. Only three of the player's six Pokémon will be selected.
• Level 50-55 Division: Like the Level 50-55 Division tournament, entered Pokémon must be between levels 50 and 55. Only three of the player's six Pokémon will be selected, and their combined levels cannot exceed 155.
• Free Battle: Pokémon of any level may be used. All six of the player's Pokémon will be selected, and multiple Pokémon of the same species can be entered.

If the Free Battle mode proper is selected, it seems to be the case that the following clauses are in play:

• If one Pokémon on the opposing team is asleep, any moves that can put a second opposing Pokémon to sleep will fail to do so. The player can still inflict a second sleep status on their own party using Rest.
• If one Pokémon on the opposing team is frozen, any moves that can freeze a second opposing Pokémon will fail to do so.
• If the player and the opponent both have only one Pokémon left, and one Pokémon uses Selfdestruct or Explosion to knock out both Pokémon, the player who used Selfdestruct or Explosion will lose the match.
