Battle Tower

The Battle Tower, only accessible in Crystal, is the first battle facility introduced in Pokémon. In this facility, Trainers can take three Pokémon into a series of seven consecutive battles, with their Pokémon being healed in between battles. In the original Japanese release of Crystal, the Battle Tower required access to the Mobile System GB, an early means of connecting to the Internet using a mobile phone. The Mobile System GB service was discontinued in 2002, leaving the facility inaccessible in all Japanese releases of Crystal, including the Virtual Console release. In international releases (including Virtual Console), where the Mobile System GB was never available, the Battle Tower is always accessible.

Battle Tower Mechanics

The Battle Tower features ten challenges, starting with Level 10 and proceeding in increments of 10, up to level 100. Each challenge has a predetermined set of Pokémon, whose level matches the level of the challenge. The trainers that the player faces will have a random selection of three Pokémon from this group, but they will never have two Pokémon of the same species or two Pokémon with the same held item.

The Pokémon that the player can enter into a given challenge must be a lower level than, or an equal level to, the level of the challenge. The Battle Tower will not automatically de-level a player's Pokémon to meet the level of the challenge, as in some later games' battle facilities. This means that, for instance, it's impossible to take a legitimately-obtained Dragonite into any challenge lower than Level 60. That said, the game does not check to see if the Pokémon is legitimately obtained, meaning a Level 10 Dragonite achieved through hacking or glitches can be entered into the Level 10 challenge.

The player cannot use items from the Bag during battle, and cannot enter two Pokémon with the same held item. Finally, the player cannot enter Eggs, and can only enter Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Celebi into Level 70 and above.

Before defeating the Elite Four, only Levels 10-40 are available.
