How Many Pokémon Can You Get Without Evolving or Breeding in Pokémon Sapphire?
Although the game contains all 386 Pokémon that existed at the time of the game's release, the player can only obtain Pokémon that are part of the Hoenn Pokédex without trading. The Hoenn Pokédex contains 200 Pokémon (202 with Jirachi and Deoxys), meaning a total of 184 Pokémon from the National Dex cannot be obtained. Those 184 are not listed on this page; check out the Locations page to see which Pokémon are excluded.
The player can get up to 178 species total in the Hoenn Pokédex in Sapphire without trading, as described here. Without evolving or breeding any Pokémon, and only collecting evolutionary stages that the player can get in the wild, as a gift or purchase, or from an in-game trade, the player can get up to 123 species in the Hoenn Pokédex. The Pokémon unavailable without evolving or breeding are as follows:
- Starter Evolutions (2) - 2 total
- The starters are only available in their base forms, leaving their evolutions inaccessible.
- Breeding (3) - 5 total
