Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Utility Guide

The following tables contain every place where a utility item (an HM, the Mach or Acro Bike, the Go-Goggles, the Devon Scope, or TM28 Dig) is required to access something.

HM01 Cut

HM01 Cut
Location Object of interest
Route 103 Cut is required to access a Guard Spec., Cheri Berries, and Leppa Berries on the east side of the route. In Emerald, it is required to access a PP Up, Black Belt Rhett, and Guitarist Marcos.
Petalburg Woods Cut is required to access the eastern part of the forest, which contains the girl who gives the Miracle Seed, two Tinymushrooms, a Great Ball, and an X Attack.
Route 104 Cut or Surf is required to access an X Accuracy in the northern half.
Trick House Puzzle 1 Cut is required to complete the puzzle.
Route 116 Cut is required to access a Super Potion, an Ether, Chesto Berries, Pinap Berries, and School Kid Jerry. In Ruby and Sapphire, it is required to access School Kid Karen. In Emerald, it is required to access a Potion, Lady Sarah, Rich Boy Dawson, and Lass Janice.
Route 117 Cut is required to access a Revive.
Route 120 Cut is required to access a Rare Candy and six Aspear Berries.
Route 121 Cut is required to access a Nugget.
Route 123 Cut is required to access a Rare Candy and Psychic Cameron. In Emerald, Cut is also required to access a PP Up, Ninja Boy Jonas, and Parasol Lady Kayley.

HM02 Fly

HM02 Fly

Ancient Tomb (Ruby/Sapphire) Fly is required to open the door to Registeel.

HM03 Surf

HM03 Surf

Route 103 Surf is required to cross from the west side to the east side and vice versa. In Emerald, it is required to access Swimmer♀ Isabelle and Swimmer♂ Pete. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Petalburg City Surf is required to access a Max Revive, an Ether, and a Rare Candy. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 104 Surf is required to freely travel to Route 105 from the southern half and to access a PP Up in the northern half. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 105 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 106 Surf is required to travel to Route 105 in the north and access a Protein and Swimmer♂ Douglas. In Ruby and Sapphire, Surf is required to access Swimmer♀ Nicole. In Emerald, Surf is required to access Swimmer♀ Kyla. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Island Cave Surf is required to access this area.
Dewford Town Surf is required to travel to Route 106 or 107. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 107 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 108 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 109 Surf is required to travel to Route 108 in the west and access a Heart Scale, a PP Up, Tuber Gwen, Swimmer♀ Alice, Swimmer♂ David, Young Couple Mel & Paul, and Fisherman Carter. In Ruby and Sapphire, it is required to access Tuber Carmen. In Emerald, it is required to access Tuber Austina and Bird Keeper Elijah. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Abandoned Ship Surf is required to access and navigate the area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Slateport City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 110 Surf is required to access a Rare Candy and the entrance to New Mauville. Wild Pokémon can be encountered here with Surf.
New Mauville Surf is required to access this area.
Route 117 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 111 Surf is required to access an HP Up in the southern section. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 114 Surf and Waterfall are required to access a Rare Candy.
Route 114 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Meteor Falls Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Meteor Falls Surf and Waterfall are required to access TM23 Iron Tail and a PP Up on 1F (front), as well as 1F (back) and all of B1F.
Route 115 Surf is required to access most of the route, including TM01 Focus Punch, Kelpsy Berries, Expert Timothy, and Black Belt Koichi. In Emerald, Surf is required to access a Heal Powder, Ninja Boy Jaiden, Triathlete Kyra, Battle Girl Helene, and Psychic Alix. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 115 The Mach Bike and Surf are required to access an Iron.
Route 118 Surf is required to cross the route and access the eastern half. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 119 Surf is required to access a Max Ether, an Ultra Ball, a Leaf Stone, a Zinc, and Fisherman Eugene (Ruby/Sapphire) or Chris (Emerald). Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 119 Surf and Waterfall are required to access four Hondew Berries. In Ruby and Sapphire, they are required to access one of the invisible Kecleon.
Route 119 Surf, Waterfall, and the Acro Bike are required to access a Rare Candy. In Emerald, they are also required to access a Nugget.
Route 120 Surf is required to access the Scorched Slab, as well as a Rare Candy and a Full Heal. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Scorched Slab Surf is required to access and traverse this area.
Safari Zone Surf is required to access a Max Revive in Area 2 and TM22 Solarbeam in Area 3. In Emerald, Surf is also required to access a Big Pearl in Area 5. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 122 Surf is required to traverse this route and access both Route 123 and Mt. Pyre. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Mt. Pyre Surf is required to access this area from Route 122.
Route 123 Surf is required to access most of the eastern part of the route from Route 122.
Lilycove City Surf is required to travel to Route 124 and the Team Magma/Aqua Hideout. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Team Magma/Aqua Hideout Surf is required to access this area.
Route 124 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 125 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Shoal Cave Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Mossdeep City Surf is required to access Mossdeep City the first time, as well as to travel to Route 124, 125, or 127. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.

Sootopolis City Surf is required to access Sootopolis City the first time and traverse the city, as well as to travel to Route 126. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.

Seafloor Cavern Surf and Dive are required to access this area.

Sky Pillar Surf is required to access this area.
Pacifidlog Town Surf is required to access Pacifidlog Town the first time, as well as to travel to Route 131 or 132. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 132 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 133 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 134 Surf is required to access and traverse this route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Sealed Chamber Surf and Dive are required to access this area.
Ever Grande City Surf is required to access Ever Grande City the first time, as well as to travel to Route 128. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Victory Road Surf is required to traverse the area and access an Elixir. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Battle Frontier (Emerald) Surf is required to access Artisan Cave.
Artisan Cave (Emerald) Surf is required to access the southwestern entrance to Artisan Cave.
Marine Cave (Emerald) Surf and Dive are required to access this area regardless of what route it appears on.

HM04 Strength

HM04 Strength

Trick House Puzzle 4 Strength is required to complete the puzzle.
Desert Ruins (Ruby and Sapphire) Strength is required to open the door to Regirock.
Fiery Path Strength is required to access TM06 Toxic and a Fire Stone
Magma Hideout (Emerald) Strength is required to navigate the area.
Seafloor Cavern Strength and Rock Smash are required to traverse this area.
Victory Road Strength and Rock Smash are required to traverse the area and access a Full Restore on B1F.

HM05 Flash

HM05 Flash
Location Object of interest
Granite Cave Flash is recommended on B1F and B2F, but not required.
Ancient Tomb (Emerald) Flash is required to open the door to Registeel.
Cave of Origin (Ruby/Sapphire) Flash is recommended, but not required.
Victory Road Flash is recommended, but not required.

HM06 Rock Smash

HM06 Rock Smash
Location Object of interest
Rusturf Tunnel Rock Smash is required to break the rocks in the center, allowing the player to get HM04 Strength from Wanda's boyfriend. Using Rock Smash here permanently removes the rocks, allowing the player to travel through the whole tunnel.
Granite Cave Rock Smash can be used to encounter wild Pokémon and find random items.
Trick House Puzzle 3 Rock Smash is required to complete the puzzle.
Route 111 Rock Smash is required to access the northern section, the desert, and most of the southern section. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Desert Ruins (Emerald) Rock Smash is required to open the door to Regirock.
Mirage Tower (Emerald) The Mach Bike and Rock Smash are required to navigate the tower.
Route 114 Rock Smash is required to access a Protein. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Route 115 Rock Smash is required to access a Great Ball and Bluk Berries.
Safari Zone Rock Smash can be used to encounter wild Pokémon in Areas 4 and 6.
Seafloor Cavern Strength and Rock Smash are required to traverse this area.
Victory Road Strength and Rock Smash are required to traverse the area and access a Full Restore on B1F.
Victory Road Rock Smash can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.

HM07 Waterfall

HM07 Waterfall

Route 114 Surf and Waterfall are required to access a Rare Candy.
Meteor Falls Surf and Waterfall are required to access TM23 Iron Tail and a PP Up on 1F (front), as well as 1F (back) and all of B1F.
Route 119 Surf and Waterfall are required to access four Hondew Berries. In Ruby and Sapphire, they are required to access one of the invisible Kecleon.
Route 119 Surf, Waterfall, and the Acro Bike are required to access a Rare Candy. In Emerald, they are also required to access a Nugget.
Ever Grande City Waterfall is required to access Ever Grande City the first time.

HM08 Dive

HM08 Dive

Route 105 (Emerald) Dive is required to access the Marine Cave.
Abandoned Ship Dive is required to access several rooms and the Room 1, 2, 4, and 6 keys, TM18 Rain Dance, a Water Stone, a Luxury Ball, and the Scanner.
Route 124 Dive is required to access all items on this route, except for those obtained from the Treasure Hunter. Dive is also required to access a Green Shard on Route 126. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Dive.
Route 125 (Emerald) Dive is required to access the Marine Cave.
Route 126 Dive is required to access all items on this route, Swimmer♀ Nikki (Ruby/Sapphire) or Brenda (Emerald), and Sootopolis City. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Dive.
Route 127 Dive is required to access a Carbos, a Star Piece, a Heart Scale, an HP Up, and a Red Shard. In Emerald, Dive is also required to access Marine Cave.
Sootopolis City Dive is required to traverse Sootopolis City the first time, as well as to travel to Route 126.
Route 128 Dive is required to access the Seafloor Cavern, as well as a Protein and a Pearl.
Seafloor Cavern Surf and Dive are required to access this area.
Route 129 (Emerald) Dive is required to access the Marine Cave.
Route 134 Dive is required to access the Sealed Chamber.
Sealed Chamber Surf and Dive are required to access this area.
Marine Cave (Emerald) Surf and Dive are required to access this area regardless of what route it appears on.

Mach Bike

Mach Bike

Granite Cave B2F The Mach Bike is required to access a Repel, a Rare Candy, and an Everstone.
Route 110 The Mach Bike or Acro Bike is required to access Cycling Road.
Route 111 The Mach Bike is required to access Black Belt Daisuke in the northern section.
Mirage Tower (Emerald) The Mach Bike and Rock Smash are required to navigate the tower.
Route 115 The Mach Bike and Surf are required to access an Iron.
Safari Zone The Mach Bike is required to access Area 3.
Sky Pillar The Mach Bike is required to reach the apex. In Emerald, the Mach Bike is not required on the player's first visit.

Acro Bike

Acro Bike

Route 110 The Mach Bike or Acro Bike is required to access Cycling Road.
Jagged Pass The Acro Bike is required to traverse the area from bottom to top.
Route 119 The Acro Bike is required to access a Calcium.
Route 119 Surf, Waterfall, and the Acro Bike are required to access a Rare Candy. In Emerald, they are also required to access a Nugget.
Safari Zone The Acro Bike is required to access Area 4.

Go-Goggles
