After the first voyage on the S.S. Aqua, speaking with the captain on subsequent voyages will give the player one of the 16 elemental Plates that they do not already have.
Some wild Pokémon can have held items. If the player captures the Pokémon, or uses Thief, Covet, or Trick, they can obtain the item. The list of wild Pokémon with held items is as follows:

Some event-only Pokémon come with held items. The Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina that can be found at Sinjoh Ruins hold the Adamant, Lustrous, and Griseous Orbs, respectively. The Spiky-eared Pichu that can be found in Ilex Forest has a Zap Plate. Finally, the event-only Enigma Stone is used to acquire the Soul Dew for Latias and Latios.
Some Trainers have held items on their Pokémon. If the player's Pokémon uses Thief, Covet, or Trick on the enemy Pokémon, and in the case of Thief and Covet does not have a held item, the user Pokémon will be able to obtain the enemy Pokémon's held item permanently.
