Gateway Colosseum

This is one of the two colosseums available to the player at the start of the game. In this colosseum, the player must defeat six Trainers, followed by the Colosseum Master, in Rental Battles. In Rental Battles, the player can only use the Pokémon on a Rental Pass, and cannot use their own Pokémon from a connected DS game. The Rental Passes that are available to the player, and the requirements to unlock them, can be found here. Completing the Gateway Colosseum with a Rental Pass is required to unlock that Pass for use with other colosseums (except for the first Pass the player selects when starting a new file).

The first time the player challenges this colosseum, they will have to face Single Battles, using the Level 30 Open ruleset, on Rank 1. After the colosseum has been completed for the first time, the player can fight through Ranks 2-8 in Single or Double Battles. Regardless of which battle type is chosen, winning on the selected rank will advance the rank by 1. After clearing all eight ranks, any subsequent challenges to this colosseum will always be Rank 8.
Because the Pokémon on Rental Passes are all level 50, all Pokémon faced in this colosseum are always level 50.

After the player completes Stargazer Colosseum the first time, the type of battle used in this colosseum changes to Trade Battle, and the rank is reset to 1. The player can still select from Single or Double Battles, and the only level rule available is Level 30 Open. In Trade Battles, the player still must use a Rental Pass, but after defeating a Trainer, the player can choose to trade one of the Pokémon they used during the battle with one the opposing Trainer used during the battle. Completing a full challenge here will allow the player to keep their modified Rental Pass for future use.

Once the Trade Battle ruleset has been unlocked, the player is not able to access the Rental Battle ruleset again. This means that if the player wishes to complete Ranks 1-8 of the Rental Battle ruleset, they must do so before completing Stargazer Colosseum for the first time.

In Single Battles, the player and opposing Trainers all have six Pokémon, and must choose three to participate in the battle with. In Doubles, all Trainers have six Pokémon, and must choose four.

The Pokémon that can be used by opposing Trainers differ depending on if the player is playing Singles or Doubles. The links below show the Pokémon pools used by each.

Rank 1 Trainers

The Trainers and their Pokémon seen during the player's first challenge always have the same moves and item, but have random IVs and Natures.
