FireRed and LeafGreen Utility Guide

The following tables contain every place where a utility item (an HM, the Bicycle, the Silph Scope, or the Poké Flute) is required to access something.

HM01 Cut

HM01 Cut
Location Object of interest
Viridian City Cut or Surf is required to access the Move Tutor for Dream Eater.
Route 2 Cut is required to access an Ether, a Parlyz Heal, HM05 Flash, a trade, and the Diglett's Cave entrance.
Pewter City Cut is required to collect the Old Amber from a Scientist in the Pewter Museum, as well as to access the Move Tutor for Seismic Toss.
Route 25 Cut is required to access TM43 Secret Power if the player did not lure Camper Flint away from that area.
Vermilion City Cut or Surf is required to access the Gym.
Route 9 Cut is required to access the route from Cerulean City.
Route 10 A hidden Super Potion can only be obtained by standing on the tile where the northernmost Cut tree was.
Route 8 Cut is required to access the grass patch, as well as a Leppa Berry, a Lum Berry, and a Rawst Berry.
Celadon City Cut is required to access and navigate the Gym.
Route 12 Cut is required to access Camper Justin, an Iron, and a Rare Candy, as well as the grass patch.
Route 13 Cut is required to access the grass patch.
Route 14 Cut is required to access the grass patch and a Zinc, as well as the upper path of Route 15.
Route 15 Using Cut on Route 14 is required to access the top path of Route 15.
Route 16 Cut is required to access the grass patch and Young Couple Lea & Jed, as well as to collect HM02 Fly from the woman in the house.
Two Island Cut is required to access a Revive.
Three Island Cut is required to access a Zinc and at Bond Bridge to access a PP Up.
Bond Bridge Cut is required to access a PP Up in Three Island.
Berry Forest Cut and Surf are required to access a Max Elixir.
Five Isle Meadow Cut is required to access a Max Potion.
Ruin Valley Cut is required to open the entrance to the Dotted Hole.
Dotted Hole Cut is required to open the entrance to this area.

HM03 Surf

HM03 Surf
Location Object of interest
Pallet Town Surf is required to travel to Route 21 to the south.
Viridian City Cut or Surf is required to access the Move Tutor for Dream Eater.
Viridian City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 22 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 4 Surf is required to access Lass Crissy by Surfing from Route 24. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Cerulean City Surf is required to access Cerulean Cave and Lass Crissy on Route 4 by Surfing through the city from Route 24. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 24 Surf is required to access Cerulean Cave and Lass Crissy on Route 4, by Surfing down the western channel. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 25 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 6 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Vermilion City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Vermilion City Cut or Surf is required to access the Gym.
Route 11 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 10 Surf is required to access the Power Plant, a Max Ether, and Pokémaniac Mark. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Celadon City Surf is required to access the Move Tutor for Softboiled. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 12 Surf is required to access TM48 Skill Swap. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Route 13 Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Fuchsia City Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Safari Zone Surf is required to access a Nugget and a Leaf Stone in the Center area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Power Plant Surf is required to access the Power Plant, by Surfing from Route 10.
Routes 19, 20, and 21 Surf is required to navigate all three routes.
Wild Pokémon can be encountered on these routes with Surf.
Seafoam Islands Surf is required to access and navigate the Seafoam Islands. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered on B3F and B4F with Surf.
Cinnabar Island Surf is required to access Cinnabar Island the first time, as well as to travel to Route 20 or 21. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
One Island Surf is required to travel to Treasure Beach in the south. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Treasure Beach Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Kindle Road Surf is required to traverse the area and travel to Mt. Ember. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Mt. Ember Surf is required to access this area.
Cape Brink Surf is required to access a PP Max. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Bond Bridge Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Berry Forest Cut and Surf are required to access a Max Elixir.
Berry Forest Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Route 23 Surf is required to navigate the route. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Four Island Surf is required to access Icefall Cave, as well as a Stardust. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Icefall Cave Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Five Island Surf is required to travel to Water Labyrinth in the north. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Five Isle Meadow Surf is required to access a PP Up, as well as Memorial Pillar to the east. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Memorial Pillar Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Water Labyrinth Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Resort Gorgeous Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Lost Cave Surf is required to access this area.
Water Path Surf is required to access the northern half of the area and travel to Green Path, as well as to access a Dragon Scale in the southern part of the area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Green Path Surf is required to access the western islands and navigate to Outcast Island in the north. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Outcast Island Surf is required to access and traverse this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Altering Cave Surf is required to access this area.
Ruin Valley Surf can be used to encounter wild Pokémon.
Trainer Tower Surf is required to access the northern half of the area, including the Trainer Tower facility itself. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Tanoby Ruins Surf is required to traverse this area and access any of the Tanoby Chambers. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.
Cerulean Cave Surf is required to access and navigate this area. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Surf.

HM04 Strength

HM04 Strength

Fuchsia City Strength is required to access a Rare Candy in the Warden's house.
Seafoam Islands Strength is required to navigate the area, and to reach Articuno.
Mt. Ember Strength is required to navigate the area.
Victory Road Strength is required to navigate the area.
Ruin Valley Strength is required to access a Sun Stone, an HP Up, and a Full Restore.
Sevault Canyon Strength and Rock Smash are required to access a King's Rock.
Tanoby Key Strength is required to complete the puzzle in this area.

HM05 Flash

Rock Tunnel Flash is recommended, but not required.

HM06 Rock Smash

HM06 Rock Smash

Rock Tunnel Rock Smash can be used to encounter wild Pokémon on B1F.
Kindle Road Rock Smash is required to access an Ether and a Carbos. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Mt. Ember Rock Smash is required to access a Fire Stone. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.
Four Island Rock Smash is required to access a Star Piece.
Sevault Canyon Strength and Rock Smash are required to access a King's Rock.
Cerulean Cave Rock Smash is required to access an Ultra Ball, a Full Restore, and a PP Up. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered here with Rock Smash.

HM07 Waterfall

Icefall Cave Waterfall is required to access the back area of 1F.

Bicycle

Routes 16, 17, and 18 A Bicycle is needed to navigate all three routes.

Silph Scope

Silph Scope

Pokémon Tower The Silph Scope is needed to battle and capture wild Pokémon. Without using glitches, the Silph Scope is required to battle the Marowak on 6F, which must be passed to acquire the Poké Flute.

Poké Flute

Poké Flute
Location Object of interest
Routes 12 and 16 The Poké Flute is needed to battle and capture Snorlax blocking the path on both routes. Clearing at least one Snorlax is required to access Fuchsia City.
